batch rename, just more options please
You can do string substitution. You can keep the filename. And you can add a few things. Ok, great. That's useful.
RED camera footage is one good example of footage that makes that not super useful.
Here's an example of a filename. A071C068032298001.R3d.
Do you know how much of that filename is useful? 068. Just the 068.
So what I would want to do is remove the first 6 characters. (that is one of the commands we should have. Search and replace doesn't work if those characters change). I would then remove characters 10-20. Well, I suppose that might have to happen first, else it would be character 4-14 right? You get the idea. The first step is to remove everything except 068.R3D.
After That I could add things like a project number as a prefix, maybe a date if you're into that sort of thing.
I really like Bulk Rename Utility. Not enough to pay the rediculous cost they ask for it for commercial use so I only use it at home, but I'm guessing it wouldn't work on RED footage anyway because it's an odd format and is folder-like. But one thing it can't do is set up rules like this:
I have a folder named Videos. I want to rename every file in that folder, but they are in subfolders. Some of those folders have spaces. The basic format to use would be [folder namefolder namefolder namefilename.extension] But for the folder names, only include the first 3 letters of the existing folder name, and if there are spaces, The first 3 letters of every subsequent word using camel caps. If there is a number in the folder name include the entire number. Do that for each folder After the videos folder only.
That's basically the format that I will be using because sometimes we grab a random file from somewhere completely unexpected. It's really nice if the filename itself contains enough information to understand the path of where it came from. Sadly, I'll have to do that manually, one folder at a time since that's too complicated for even batch rename utility.
Basically, look at batch rename utility and be sure you can do pretty much everything that it can do. And if you add some things like that, even better.
